Jeethu Joseph responds to ‘serial-level’ criticism

'Drishyam 3’ director Jeethu Joseph fires back at ‘serial-level’ criticism, defends realism in Mohanlal starrer

Director Jeethu Joseph, known for gripping narratives, addresses criticism of his films’ “serial-level” technical quality. He explains his preference for realism in lighting and art direction, aiming for authenticity over current trends. Joseph also points to targeted negative online campaigns influencing audience perception, while confirming ‘Drishyam 3’ will explore a different storytelling path.

Mollywood director Jeethu Joseph is undeniably a great storyteller and his films from ‘Memories’ to ‘Drishyam’ prove he has the knack for writing gripping screenplays. However, Jeethu has faced criticism regarding execution, with most audiences complaining about the technical quality which they describe as “serial-level” making. Jeethu Joseph has now addressed ongoing criticism surrounding the technical style of his films.

Jeethu Joseph on criticism around technical style

Over the years, Jeethu Joseph’s films have sparked discussions regarding their visual presentation. Some viewers have questioned the technical polish, often comparing it to television-style execution. Despite this criticism, the director has maintained a consistent approach rooted in his creative preferences. In a recent interaction with The New Indian Express, the filmmaker shared his perspective on these reactions. The filmmaker shared, “In most films today, you can see a kind of colourful lighting style. When it comes to my films, that difference is not due to any fault of my team. It is because I prefer things to look more realistic. Also, there are other reasons behind some of the criticism, and I have figured them out.””I have personally seen posts targeting certain individuals. There are some people who consistently write negative comments for every film. Others get influenced after repeatedly seeing such posts and end up criticising as well. There are even people who target a film right after its first show. In some cases, I consciously control aspects like art direction because I want things to feel realistic,” said Jeethu Joseph.

Jeethu Joseph on realism vs visual style

The director emphasised his inclination towards a grounded visual tone rather than a stylised presentation. The ‘Drishyam 3’ director explained that choices related to lighting and production design are deliberate, not accidental. His approach prioritizes authentic storytelling, even if it differs from current industry trends.

‘Drishyam 3’ story direction

The upcoming film ‘Drishyam 3’ will revisit the character of Georgekutty after a gap of several years. As Jeethu mentioned in previous interviews, unlike earlier parts, the third installment will take a slightly different storytelling route and won’t be a thriller-per-se like the second part. The movie will release on May 21.On the other hand, Jeethu Joseph’s previous two films ‘Mirage’ and ‘Valathu Vashathe Kallan,’ failed to impress the audiences. Go to Source
