Jana Nayagan censor row: Jiiva on the 48 cuts in his film

Jiiva REACTs to Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ censor row: ‘I acted in a film, which had 48 cuts’

Actor Jiiva’s film ‘Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil’ has been advanced to a January 15th Pongal release, filling a void left by Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’. Jiiva also shared his past experience with censorship, recalling his 2020 film ‘Gypsy’ which faced 48 cuts before its release was further impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Actor Jiiva is eagerly awaiting the release of his film ‘Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil’. The film, which was initially slated for release on January 30, has been moved up to January 15, aiming at the Pongal festive season. During the recent press meet in Chennai, Jiiva spoke about the current censorship row linked to Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’. When he was asked about the censorship issues, the actor recalled the time, when one of his films ran into similar trouble.

‘I am the brand ambassador’

The actor stated that the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) directed 48 cuts for his film ‘Gypsy’ released in 2020. “I am the brand ambassador for the censor board. I acted in a film titled Gypsy, which had 48 cuts. I am more experienced in this regard. With all the cuts, the film screened even in black-and-white. Just when we finally got clearance from the censor board after all the cuts, the COVID pandemic started. We only faced issues during that film’s release,” he said, on Sunday. Directed by Raju Murugan, ‘Gypsy’ is a Tamil film featuring Jiiva, Natasha Singh, Lal Jose, and Sunny Wayne, in the lead roles. The film revolves around a musician who falls for a girl from a Muslim household.

‘Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil’ to arrive early

Jiiva also spoke about why he and his team have planned to move their film ‘Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil’ up for Pongal release. “We were supposed to come on January 30, but this date, January 15 is what has been destined. As there is a void (due to the postponement of the release of Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’), a lot of theatre owners had called us. While we are happy that we are getting calls from theatres, we are also saddened by the fact that Jana Nayagan hasn’t released,” he added.
