‘I’m not an activist, I’m a film personality’: Aamir on doing movies with social issues

'I'm not an activist, I'm a film personality,' says Aamir Khan as he opens up on doing movies that address social issues; reveals it has happened organically

Aamir Khan who was last seen in ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ has largely been concentrating on producing more movies, than acting. But recently, as the actor made an appearance at IFFI 2025 (International Film Festival Of India) held in Goa, the actor revealed that he’s now set to focus on acting again, once his current slate of movies under production are done. Meanwhile while talking at the festival, Aamir opened up on his script choices as well. During this session titled, ‘The Narrative Architect of Social Transformation and Inclusivity’ at the festival, the actor said that it’s not his conscious effort to always choose scripts with a social message. He said, “I choose films purely based on my emotional excitement for the story, even if it goes completely against the norm. Most of my decisions have been impractical by industry standards. When we made Lagaan, even Javed Saab advised us not to. By all logic, I shouldn’t have become a star, I broke every rule. But somehow, those unconventional choices connected with people and I’m deeply grateful.”

Aamir Khan Remembers Dharmendra Loved his ‘Lahore 1947’ Script!

He added further, “Whether it’s Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots, Dangal, or Laapataa Ladies, the foundation was laid by the writers. They created the worlds and the characters, I simply gravitated toward scripts that moved me. Many of my films address social issues, but that happened organically, not by design. I am a complete film personality, not an activist. My primary objective is to entertain my audience.”During this chat at the festival, Aamir also spoke about Dharmendra who passed away recently. Aamir was spotted at his last rites but couldn’t attend his prayer meet as he was at IFFI. Talking about the legendary actor, Aamir said while mourning his loss, “Though hailed as the He-Man of Indian cinema, he was equally brilliant in all genres including, romance, comedy and drama; an actor of remarkable range and presence. He was a gentle giant and finest actor. His mastery of language, innate dignity and extraordinary range as an artist made him an institution in himself. His passing is a profound personal and artistic loss.” As Aamir concluded the conversation, he also opened up on moving to direction and how it would be a big choice and decision for him. He said that if he chooses to direct, he may leave acting. “Direction is actually my big love. Filmmaking is what I enjoy the most. I did direct once, but that was more out of a crisis, so it doesn’t really count as a planned move. But the day I consciously decide to take up direction, I’ll probably stop acting, because it will consume me completely. That’s why I’m delaying that decision for now,” he said. Go to Source
