A feature-length documentary about legendary British Formula 1 driver James Hunt has entered production with several high-profile figures from motorsport now attached to contribute. The film, titled ‘Hunt: We Need to Talk About James’, examines the life of the racing icon who passed away in 1993 at the age of 43, and is being made with the support of the Hunt estate.According to Deadline, Deep Fusion, a production company and technology specialist, is helming the production. F1 champion Damon Hill and motorsport mogul Bernie Ecclestone have been confirmed as contributors to the documentary, which explores how the rebellious Hunt became one of the sport’s most enduring and beloved characters. The film is being planned for release on the 50th anniversary of Hunt’s dramatic Formula 1 championship victory in 1976.

Creative team and production details

Benjamin Field directs and produces the documentary, with John Gore serving as executive producer. Director and Deep Fusion founder Field spoke about the documentary’s ambitions and personal significance. “This film aims to do for James Hunt what Senna did for Ayrton Senna, delivering a rare treat for F1 and motorsport fans globally as well as for classic documentary enthusiasts who love a great story. Hunt: We Need to Talk About James is a very human story, painting a complete picture of a man who was definitely flawed, totally driven but also an unexpectedly private figure. The film presents a rounded picture of a very human being. Hunt remains one of the most beloved British sporting icons and this film means a great deal to me personally. Growing up listening to his commentary made me into the F1 fan I am today, so directing this documentary is a real honour and a privilege,” he stated as per the outlet.

Freddie Hunt’s perspective on the documentary

Freddie Hunt, James Hunt’s son, expressed his enthusiasm about the project and the opportunity to present a more complete picture of his father. “Dad has so often been painted as something of a caricature. I’m hugely excited that, for the first time, the world will see both sides of the man – and already during filming, stories have come to light that have never been spoken about before,” Freddie Hunt said.

Director’s previous work and technological approach

Field is known for his work on a documentary about Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson. The film, ‘Gerry Anderson: A Life Uncharted’, which was created for a streaming platform and shopped internationally, utilised AI technology to repurpose audio archive footage and bring Anderson back to the screen to discuss his life and career, demonstrating Field’s innovative approach to documentary filmmaking and his ability to blend archival material with contemporary technology in compelling ways.
