How Thalapathy Vijay brought a unique charm to ‘Nanban’

How Thalapathy Vijay brought a unique charm to 'Nanban'; Why '3 Idiots' still inspires one of Tamil cinema’s best remakes

Long before Vijay entered politics and became one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, he surprised audiences with a very different role in ‘Nanban.’ The film was the Tamil remake of the cult Bollywood hit ‘3 Idiots’ starring Aamir Khan. Even today, ‘Nanban’ remains one of the most loved remakes in Indian cinema. In the midst of the buzz around a sequel to ‘3 Idiots’ these days, many are remembering Vijay’s wonderful portrayal of Panchavan Parivendhan, or Pari as he is popularly known. This role revealed the actor’s emotional, intellectual, and sensitive side.

Vijay’s Panchavan brought a fresh Tamil flavor

Vijay played the Tamil interpretation of the iconic character Rancho, played by Aamir Khan in ‘3 Idiots.’ Similar to Rancho, Panchavan doubted the education system and believed one should learn things out of curiosity rather than fear. But Vijay made a significant difference in this portrayal with his own touch. Though both Rancho and Panchavan were intellectually brilliant, Panchavan seemed more energetic and fun-loving than Rancho. Director S. Shankar made some changes for the Tamil audience in this movie.

Friendship and emotions became the soul of ‘Nanban’

The friendship of Vijay, Jiiva, and Srikanth emerged as one of the strongest points of the movie ‘Nanban’. The relationship among these three characters resembled that of Rancho, Farhan, and Raju from the Hindi version of the movie. The female lead of the movie was portrayed by Ileana D’Cruz, who played the same part as Kareena Kapoor Khan in ‘3 Idiots’. Popular actor Sathyaraj played the role of the strict principal, a part initially played by Boman Irani in ‘3 Idiots’.

‘Nanban’ proved that good stories have no language barrier

However, despite being very similar to the original story ‘3 Idiots,’ ‘Nanban’ established its own individuality. Many scenes from the original movie were repeated nearly verbatim; however, Vijay’s on-screen presence filled the movie with freshness. The plot twist revealing Panchavan’s true identity and subsequent fame as an inventor was perfectly performed in Tamil. In addition, ‘Nanban’ became a huge commercial success and is rumored to have grossed more than Rs 150 crore in revenue. Above all, it showed how powerful the idea of a good story about friendship and ambitions can be in any language. Go to Source
