‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ undergoes CBFC edits

'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai' undergoes CBFC edits; cricket references and brand mentions modified

As theatres prepare for a fresh wave of releases following the conclusion of IPL 2026, one of the biggest Hindi films arriving this week is David Dhawan’s comedy entertainer ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’. Starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, the film has already generated significant curiosity among moviegoers. Before its release, however, the film underwent a few changes suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Several scenes and dialogues modified in ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’

According to Bollywood Hungama, the comedy drama has received a U/A 16+ certificate from the censor board. While granting approval, the Examining Committee reportedly instructed the makers to make a handful of modifications across the film. A few dialogues were altered after certain words were deemed unsuitable. The board also objected to a visual featuring an offensive hand gesture and asked for it to be changed.Apart from this, references linked to a condom brand were toned down. While the brand name appearing on screen was blurred, flavour-related terms associated with the product were muted in the audio track.

Cricket references also tweaked in ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’.

Interestingly, one sequence containing the names of England cricketers Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes was also modified. The visual was edited and shortened, with the final approved version limited to six seconds. The board further suggested changes to a dance sequence. In some shots featuring female performers, the visuals were adjusted because undergarments were visible. The makers were asked to reframe the footage by focusing more closely on the face and upper body portions of the performers.

Certificate issued after changes

Following the implementation of all recommended revisions, the film was granted its censor certificate on May 27. The official certificate also reveals the movie’s duration. ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ has a runtime of 136 minutes and 40 seconds, making it approximately 2 hours and 17 minutes long.

A star-studded comedy from David Dhawan

The film marks another comedy outing from David Dhawan, a filmmaker known for delivering popular entertainers over several decades. Leading the cast are Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde. Joining them are Maniesh Paul, Chunky Pandey, Jimmy Shergill, Mouni Roy, Rakesh Bedi, Ali Asgar and Rajesh Kumar in pivotal roles.Produced by Ramesh Taurani under the Tips Films banner, the film is expected to blend humour, romance and family drama in classic David Dhawan style.

‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ release date

With censor formalities completed and promotional activities in full swing, ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ is now ready for its theatrical debut on June 5. The film arrives at a time when cinemas are looking to capitalise on the post-IPL period, and trade analysts will be watching closely to see whether this comedy entertainer can translate its pre-release buzz into strong box-office numbers.
