Conan O’Brien opens up about Rob Reiner’s tragic demise

‘Still hard for me to comprehend’: Conan O’Brien breaks his silence on Rob Reiner’s killing after holiday party

Conan O’Brien finally opened up about the night everything changed, the night Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner left his holiday party and never made it home. Until now, he’d stayed quiet, but in a new interview, he broke the silence on what happened around two months back that shook Hollywood, as well as the world.

Rob Reiner’s tragic demise: What happened?

Rob Reiner (78) and Michele Reiner (70) were found dead in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025, just hours after they’d laughed and mingled with friends at Conan’s Christmas party. And the details are as grim as they come. Per PEOPLE, police revealed that both Rob and Michele were stabbed multiple times. The scene was brutal. The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested for murder. Now, he reportedly faces the rest of his life behind bars, maybe even the death penalty. There wasn’t any sign that someone forced their way into the house. In fact, per Page Six, people at the party noticed something was off. Witnesses say Rob and Nick argued, and that too, loudly enough for others to notice. Nick’s behavior rattled people that night. Not long after, the family left together.

Conan O’Brien’s revelation

For a long stretch, Conan O’Brien kept his grief to himself. He didn’t issue any statements or give any interviews. In February, he finally talked about it with The New Yorker. “I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them,” Conan said. He and his wife, Liza, had been spending a lot of time with the Reiners. “They were just such lovely people,” he said, adding, “To have that experience of saying good night to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone…I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward. There’s no other word for it.”He struggled to wrap his head around it. “It’s just so awful,” he told. “And I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there, and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend.”The loss hit him hard, both as a friend and as a fan. “It’s an almost impossible feat,” Conan said, thinking about Rob’s run as a director. “With Spinal Tap alone, if that’d been the only thing he ever did, he influenced my generation enormously. Spinal Tap, when it came out, I was in college, and it was like a splitting-the-atom moment.”

Rob Reiner: The legacy he left behind

Rob Reiner left a huge mark on Hollywood, no question. Between ‘Spinal Tap’, ‘When Harry Met Sally…’, ‘Stand by Me’, and ‘The Princess Bride’, he changed movies. Michele, too, was loved by the people who knew her. Their daughter discovered the bodies. The murder investigation took over the news. Nick Reiner got charged with both murders and now waits to see if he’ll spend his life in prison, or worse. Go to Source
