Veteran actress and singer of Hindi cinema, Sulakshana Pandit, passed away on November 6 at the age of 71. Her prayer meet was held at the ISKCON Temple in Juhu, Mumbai, on Monday, where several well-known faces from the film and music industry gathered to pay their last respects to the beloved star.

The atmosphere at the ISKCON Temple was filled with emotion as celebrities arrived to offer their condolences. Among the first to arrive was Sulakshana’s sister Vijayta Pandit, who looked visibly emotional as she attended the service. Her brother, music composer Jatin Pandit, was also seen looking heartbroken.Veteran actor Jeetendra, who shared screen space with many from Sulakshana’s era, arrived quietly to pay his tribute. Actors Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff and his son Tiger Shroff also attended the prayer meet.Singer Udit Narayan, singer Javed Ali and actress-singer Padmini Kolhapure were seen joining the gathering to honour the late artist. Actor Ranjeet was also spotted arriving to pay his last respects.

Lalit Pandit shares details about Sulakshana Pandit’s demise

Speaking to PTI, Sulakshana’s brother Lalit Pandit revealed that she had been unwell for a few days and complained of difficulty in breathing. “She passed away due to cardiac arrest around 7 pm. She had complained of breathlessness and seemed a bit unwell. We were taking her to Nanavati hospital, but she died before we could reach the hospital,” Lalit Pandit said.

Sulakshana Pandit’s acting journey in Bollywood

Sulakshana Pandit made her acting debut with the 1975 film ‘Uljhan’ opposite Sanjeev Kumar. Her charming screen presence and natural performance made her one of the promising actresses of the 1970s and early 1980s.She went on to star alongside some of the biggest names in Indian cinema, including Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna. Her filmography includes memorable titles such as ‘Sankoch’, ‘Hera Pheri’, ‘Khandaan’, ‘Dharam Khanta’, ‘Do Waqt Ki Roti’ and ‘Gora’. Sulakshana also acted in a Bengali film titled ‘Bandie’ in 1978, opposite the legendary Uttam Kumar, proving her versatility as an actress across languages.

Sulakshana Pandit’s achievements as a playback singer

Apart from being a talented actress, Sulakshana Pandit was also a gifted playback singer. Her melodious voice earned her a special place in the hearts of music lovers. She lent her voice to songs in several Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Oriya and Gujarati.The late singer’s popular songs include timeless melodies like ‘Tu Hi Saagar Tu Hi Kinara’, ‘Pardesiya Tere Desh Mein’, ‘Bekrar Dil Tut Gaya’, ‘Baandhi Re Kahe Preet’, ‘Saat Samundar Paar’, ‘Somvaar Ko Hum Mile’, ‘Sona Re Tujhe Kaise Miloon’, ‘Yeh Pyara Lage Tera Chehra’, ‘Jab Aati Hogi Yaad Meri’ and ‘Yeh Pyar Kiya Hai’.
