“We kept our relationship private for a long time, about eight or nine months,” Blanco said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El PaÃs. He then revealed an important conversation that preceded their public announcement. “And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends.’ And then I said, ‘You know what? Screw it.’ We’re lucky because we both have friends and family we’ve known since before all this, and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love,” he recalled.

Blanco explained that Gomez’s question about going public arose partly from considerations related to her established celebrity status. Gomez, who rose to prominence as a teen on a Disney Channel series, has built an expansive career spanning television, film and music.
