Aamir Khan responds to ‘love jihad’ controversy amid fatwa, says Gauri Spratt, Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao never changed their religion: ‘Life is getting more comical as time passes’

Aamir Khan has strongly refuted allegations labelling him the “brand ambassador of love jihad,” maintaining that religion has never influenced the marriages in his family. The actor, who married longtime partner Gauri Spratt in an intimate registered ceremony on July 5, said all his marriages have been civil unions and none of his partners converted their religion. His remarks come as his marriage to Gauri has sparked political and religious debate online.

Aamir Khan says his family believes in inclusivity

Speaking to Subhash K Jha for Deccan Chronicle, Aamir highlighted that interfaith marriages have long been a part of his family and stressed that religious conversion was never a condition for any of those relationships.Responding to the allegations, he said, “The truth is that ours is a very inclusive family. Both my sisters are married to Hindus; my daughter is also married to a Hindu. My cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian.”The ‘Taare Zameen Par’ actor also clarified that neither his current wife Gauri Spratt nor his former wives, Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao, embraced Islam after marriage. “Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Reena converted their religion, as we had civil marriages. Gauri is not even Hindu, she is Christian, and not even a practising Christian at that. Life is getting more comical as time passes.” For the unversed, Aamir Khan was married to Reena Dutta from 1986 to 2002 before marrying filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The two separated in 2021 but continue to co-parent their son.

Aamir Khan’s third marriage also draws religious controversy

The actor’s latest comments come days after his marriage to Gauri Spratt became the subject of controversy. According to ANI, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, reportedly issued a fatwa against Aamir over his interfaith marriage, claiming it was not permissible under his interpretation of Sharia because Gauri is not a Muslim. In a video circulating online, the cleric said, “Muslim mard ke liye, iman walon ke liye, gair Muslim se shaadi karna haraam hai.”The clergy further stated that a Muslim man marrying a non-Muslim woman commits a sin and added that those who refuse to acknowledge it as sinful would ultimately be answerable to Allah. So far, Aamir Khan has not reacted to the cleric’s remarks, and his team has also remained silent.

Aamir and Gauri have known each other for nearly 25 years but reconnected a little over two years ago through the actor’s cousin, Nuzhat Khan, in Bengaluru. Their renewed friendship gradually blossomed into a relationship, and after dating for more than two years, the couple got married on July 5. The actor first introduced Gauri to the media during his 60th birthday celebrations last year.
