Manchester United on verge of making new goalkeeper deal with Andre Onana’s spot at risk

Manchester United are close to completing a €20m deal for a new goalkeeper who could challenge André Onana for the No.1 spot. The move comes as questions grow over Onana’s form and his absence during the opening clash against Arsenal.

Manchester United are moving closer to signing a new goalkeeper in a deal worth around €20 million (over Rs 200 crore). According to reports, United have opened talks with Royal Antwerp for their 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who is now expected to compete with Andre Onana for the No.1 spot at Old Trafford.

Onana missed out on United’s opening game against Arsenal, and Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir kept in his place. However, Bayindir made a mistake in the match, which resulted in their 1-0 loss in front of home fans. It has now emerged that the club is looking to bring Lammens as their fourth goalkeeper option.

Who is Senne Lammens?

Senne Lammens has already played UEFA Champions League football and is seen as the long-term option for United if they manage to crack the deal. According to The Guardian, the Red Devils have already discussed personal terms with the player, but nothing has been officially signed yet.

Lammens made his senior debut for Club Brugge in 2021 after featuring in 24 games for their U-23 side during the 2020–21 season. He left the club in 2023 and signed a four-year deal with Antwerp. Initially the second-choice goalkeeper, he eventually established himself as the first-choice ahead of Jean Butez.

Meanwhile, Onana is expected to be away in December and January with Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. This could be one of the reasons why United are looking for another goalkeeper, although reports suggest that Lammens is being considered as a first-choice option for this season regardless.

United manager Ruben Amorim has already signed four players in the ongoing summer window, which will close on September 1. They have spent over Rs 1,800 crore to bring in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Diego Leon to strengthen their attack.

Earlier, there were reports suggesting that Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma could join United for the ongoing Premier League season as he was made available by his club. However, it now appears that United might be looking to bring in up-and-coming Lammens.
