The United States and China, the world’s two largest military powers, are locked in a high-stakes race to develop sixth-generation fighter jets. Recently, a mysterious photo circulated on Chinese social media, leaving experts puzzled and sparking widespread speculation.

It’s claimed that these photos are of China’s J-50 stealth fighter jet, considered a next-generation air superpower. These photos, released on September 25th, show a tailless fighter jet parked on a runway, clearly demonstrating China’s progress in its sixth-generation stealth fighter jet programme.

What’s Special About The J-50?

Tailless Design: The nose-mounted air data boom, visible in older photos, is now missing. This indicates that its sensors are now integrated directly into the aircraft.

Canopy Design: The new photos clearly show a blended canopy and a single-seat cockpit. Initially, experts believed it might be a two-seater, judging by its long canopy.

High-tech onboard sensors: The data boom used in earlier test flights has now been replaced by advanced onboard sensors. This is considered a major technological advancement.

Possibility of drone control: Experts believe a two-seater version could also be developed, with a second pilot controlling drone operations or system-related missions.

What Do Experts Say?

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Chinese military expert Song Zhongping says this is likely the second prototype (002), which is more advanced than the first (001). Just like the J-20’s initial testing, which featured a data boom, it was later removed and incorporated into the sensor system.

Aviation analyst Fu Qianshao believes that if the image is real, it indicates that China’s testing is progressing rapidly. He said that the single-seat version will be for air superiority missions, while if a two-seater version is introduced, it will work in conjunction with drones and other combat platforms.

Key Features

  • China has not officially revealed the specifications of the J-50, but the information emerging from experts and reports is surprising. First, it is a 6th-generation stealth fighter jet.
  • Its design is tailless, with a steel body and a blended canopy. It is likely a single-seater, but a two-seater version could also be developed.
  • Its engine is a high-thrust turbofan, likely an upgraded version of the WS-15. It specialises in air superiority, deep penetration, and drone coordination. It is equipped with centric warfare capabilities.
  • It is equipped with onboard high-precision sensors, enabling it to quickly detect enemy targets. Its entire system is based on artificial intelligence.
  • Compared to the Rafale and F-35 fighter jets, it is a technological advance. It is a direct competitor to America’s next-gen fighter, the F-47.

USA vs China: Who Is Ahead?

The US has already announced plans to develop the F-47, a sixth-generation fighter, as part of its Next Generation Air Dominance programme, which will be operational by 2028.

While China is refraining from making official statements, the continued emergence of new images and prototypes indicates that Beijing is quietly completing its preparations.

The J-50 is not just a fighter jet, but a future air combat platform. Its stealth capabilities and tailless design could make it virtually invisible on radar. If a two-seater version were to arrive, it would be a lethal combination of human, AI, and drone teaming.
