Quote of the day by Mieko Kamiya, mother of ikigai: 'We did not create the morning... The meaning of life is like the morning'

Quote of the day by mother of ikigai philosophy Mieko Kamiya

Mieko Kamiya is widely remembered today as the mother of ikigai psychology, courtesy of the bestselling book by Hector Garcia and Francesc Iralles. Born in Japan in 1914, Mieko Kamiya grew up in an intellectually rich environment, living for periods in Switzerland and the United States. She spoke multiple languages and eventually became a psychiatrist, researcher, and translator. Her life’s work was defined by her time treating patients with Hansen’s disease, commonly known as leprosy, at the Nagashima Aiseien Sanatorium in Japan. At that time, people with leprosy faced severe social stigma, forced isolation, and painful physical suffering. They were cut off from their families, their careers, and the normal flow of society. Kamiya dedicated her medical career to understanding how human beings can find a reason to keep living when everything they held dear had been taken away. These experiences led her to write her groundbreaking 1966 book, Ikigai-ni-tsuite (“On the Meaning of Life” or “About Ikigai”). Long before Western self-help books turned ikigai into a career chart or a business framework, Kamiya studied it as a psychological reality. She explored what makes life feel worth living from the inside out. The quote about the morning comes directly from this profound understanding of human survival, recovery, and daily hope.Ikigai means the purpose of life. Kamiya explained it beautifully when she wrote:“When we wake up from sleep, we are greeted by the morning. We did not create the morning; it somehow came to give us the chance to live another day. We wake up and discover the morning. The meaning of life is like the morning”.

Purpose of life is waiting to be discovered

Kamiya freed us from the pursuit of purpose by comparing it to the morning. It is there. It just remains to be seen, discovered. Like you don’t have to make the sun rise, you don’t have to invent the purpose of your life. It is aligned with your life. The quote points out that the morning “somehow came to give us the chance to live another day.” There is deep humility in this observation. Human beings like to feel in control. We like to believe that our efforts dictate our reality. Yet, no matter how rich, powerful, or intelligent a person is, no one can force a new day to appear.By framing the morning as something that arrives on its own, Kamiya highlights that life itself is an unearned gift. It is an opportunity offered to us without any prior transaction. When you view a new day as something you did not create, your attitude shifts from demand to gratitude. You stop treating time as something you are owed and start seeing it as a fresh canvas given to you to experience. For the patients Kamiya treated, long-term goals and grand visions of the future were often impossible due to their illness and confinement. If meaning required achieving huge ambitions, those patients would have been left in complete despair.Comparing life’s meaning to the morning grounds purpose in the present moment. The morning represents a daily reset. No matter how terrible yesterday was, how badly you failed, or how much pain you suffered, the previous day eventually ends. The arrival of dawn offers a quiet, unannounced restart. It gives you twenty-four new hours to take a breath, feel the warmth of the sun, connect with another person, or find a tiny reason to keep moving forward. Meaning does not require solving your whole life at once; it only requires stepping into the day that has just arrived. This quote sits at the core of Kamiya’s original theory of ikigai. She divided ikigai into two ideas: the source of meaning, and the actual feeling of meaning, which she called ikigai-kan.The morning is a source. The feeling of waking up, noticing the light, and feeling glad to be alive to see it is ikigai-kan. Kamiya proved that true fulfillment is not found in grand achievements or external validation. Instead, it is found in the quiet awareness of life itself. Go to Source
