The Nepal Army on Thursday fired shots at prisoners, taking advantage of the country’s unrest and power vacuum, who attempted to flee from the Ramechap prison.

The Kathmandu Post quoted authorities as reporting that the army troops opened fire to stop a mass breakout from Ramechhap District Prison, wounding more than a dozen inmates.

Chief District Officer Shyam Krishna Thapa as saying that prisoners broke through several internal locks and tried to smash open the main gate before security forces fired. “Around 12 to 13 inmates were injured after the army opened fire as they reached the gate,” he said.

Police later said that the situation is under control.

According to local media reports, hundreds of prisoners escaped from jails in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lalitpur.

India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has apprehended 22 Nepali prisoners at the Indo-Nepal border near Siddharthnagar in Uttar Pradesh.

SSB has been on high alert since violence began in Nepal. Patrolling has been increased, deployment strengthened, and the border sealed.

Meanwhile, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah appealed to Nepal’s Gen Z and the wider public on Thursday to remain calm as the country transitions to an interim administration and fresh elections.

In a post on X, Shah called the current moment “unprecedented” and urged young protesters not to panic. “Please be patient. Now the country is going to get an interim government, which will hold new elections… to give the country a new mandate,” he wrote.

Nepal was rocked by Gen Z–led protests sparked by a short-lived social-media ban and long-simmering anger over corruption, triggering curfews and army deployment as clashes intensified in Kathmandu and other cities. The entire protest has left around 25 people dead, while over 600 people were injured. Authorities have now reopened Kathmandu airport after a brief shutdown, but prohibitory orders remain in force as the situation evolves.
