Nupur Bora, an Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer, was arrested on Monday for allegedly possessing wealth far beyond her known sources of income. The arrest was made by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell after raids at her residences led to the recovery of over Rs 92.5 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth nearly Rs 1.5 crore.

Bora, 36, was serving as Circle Officer in Goroimari, Kamrup district, at the time of her arrest. Additional Rs 10 lakh in cash was recovered from her rented house in Barpeta during a separate raid, taking the estimated total recovery to nearly Rs 2 crore.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the officer had amassed wealth 400 times greater than her official earnings. “We think that not just suspension or dismissal from the job would suffice. We have to ensure penal measures through the legal process,” he said on Tuesday.

Who Is Nupur Bora?

Nupur Bora, born on March 31, 1989, completed her early education at Cotton College in Guwahati and later pursued a degree in English Literature from Gauhati University.

Before joining the civil services, Bora worked in education. As per her Facebook profile, her first job was as a postgraduate subject teacher at the Government Higher Secondary School in Tezpur from September 2016. Two years later, she became a lecturer at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) — a government-run teacher training institution, The Indian Express reported.

Bora entered the civil services six years ago. Her first posting was as Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong district in January 2019. She was transferred to Barpeta district as Circle Officer in June 2023, before being posted in Kamrup district’s Goroimari.

Under Scanner For Past 6 Months

According to the Assam Chief Minister, it was her alleged actions during her tenure in Barpeta that reportedly brought her under the government’s radar. Sarma claimed that Bora had been under surveillance for six months due to irregularities in land transfer deals.

“There is a lot of corruption happening in Assam’s minority-dominated revenue circles… While she was a circle officer in Barpeta, she was transferring Hindu’s lands to Muslims by taking money in return, and because of that, we are now taking stern action against her,” the CM alleged.
