Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and the Tamil Nadu Police on Friday traded accusations in the Madras High Court during a hearing on the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives last weekend.

The tragic incident took place on September 27 during a massive public rally held in Karur district. Thousands had gathered to see Vijay, the popular Tamil film star and TVK chief. According to reports, the crowd swelled beyond control, and a stampede followed, killing 41 people and injuring many others.

TVK, while placing its version before the court, blamed the police for mishandling the situation.

“When supporters were waiting to see their leader, Vijay, some from the crowd threw slippers. Without warning, the cops started lathicharging people which led to the stampede,” the party alleged. “Police failed to handle it in the right way.”

TVK’s legal counsel argued that there were clear lapses in how the police managed the large gathering and insisted that the crowd would not have panicked if the situation had been dealt with calmly.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Police also accused TVK of being careless with its own supporters.

“They didn’t care about their own people,” police officials said in court. “As soon as the incident happened, their leaders absconded.”
