In a disturbing incident, a woman was tied and her hair was chopped off in full public view in the Udaipur area of Tripura’s Gomati district after she was accused of having an extramarital affair, according to reports.

A group of women allegedly tied Purnima Das’ hands and feet and chopped off her hair in public, while local residents kept recording the video instead of intervening. The incident was allegedly instigated by BJP booth president Nitai Dutta and local BJP leader Seema Begum, according to the Times of India.

According to witnesses, both leaders led the mob to the victim’s house and openly mocked Purnima Das while she was being tortured. The victim’s husband, Swapan Das, and his parents also did not oppose the mob attack.

The villagers claimed that Purnima’s humiliation was carried out to “teach her a lesson” over a previous family dispute involving allegations of extramarital relations. The disturbing video surfaced on social media, drawing widespread outrage.

According to the TOI report, civil society groups demanded immediate action against those responsible for the incident, describing the act as a “medieval barbarity”, but the police reportedly booked the relatives of the victim woman, while no action was taken against the mob. The victim’s husband was taken to the police station on Sunday.

In a separate incident, a woman was allegedly gang-raped by two of her neighbours in a moving car in Tripura’s Gomati district. The two accused, identified as Mithun Debnath (24) and Bower Debbarma (24) of Maharani, have been arrested.

“The woman, accompanied by two of her neighbours, went to Tripureswari temple on Thursday evening. After visiting the temple, two boys took her to Udaipur railway station in a car. On the way, Mithun and Bower raped her in the moving vehicle”, officer-in-charge of RK Pur women police station, Nibha Sinha, told news agency PTI.
