TikTok, the Chinese short-video platform banned in India since June 2020, stirred speculation about a possible comeback after some users reported being able to access its website. While the app itself remains unavailable on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the sudden reappearance of the TikTok domain fueled excitement among fans who have long awaited its revival. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, has so far issued no official statement on a relaunch.

However, social media users said that they were able to load TikTok’s website, while others said it remained inaccessible.

Many subpages are still not functional, suggesting the platform has not formally restarted operations in India.

Why Was TikTok Banned In India?

TikTok was among 59 Chinese apps banned by the Indian government in June 2020. The Ministry of Electronics and IT said the apps were “engaged in activities prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.”

The ban came shortly after violent clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley, which marked one of the sharpest downturns in bilateral relations in decades.

What’s Next?

TikTok, once one of the most downloaded apps in India with more than 200 million users, has not officially announced any plans to re-enter the Indian market. For now, the app remains barred, but its brief resurfacing has rekindled hopes among fans of the platform.
