‘This Is Zubeen’s Assam, Won’t Allow It To Become Nepal’: Assam CM Warns Against Violence

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that he has issued lookout notices for Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East Festival, and Siddharth Sharma, the manager of late singer Zubeen Garg.

He also informed that their bank accounts, debit cards, and credit cards have been frozen as part of the ongoing investigation into Garg’s death.

Speaking during a Facebook Live session, he also urged the duo to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by October 6.

“This is Zubeen’s Assam. We will not allow this to become Nepal,” Sarma said, adding that while people are seeking justice for Garg, it must not come through unrest or violence.

His reference to Nepal was in connection with the recent political turmoil in the neighbouring country, where violent protests broke out after bans were imposed on several social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

Nepal recently witnessed violent protests that erupted following the restrictions imposed by the government on social media platforms.

The Chief Minister recalled leaders like Lachit Borphukan and Dr Bhupen Hazarika to remind people of the state’s strong and proud history, and said that Assam should not face such unrest.

He also said he was willing to “sacrifice” himself to keep Assam peaceful and stable.

Special Investigation Team (SIT) sources cited by NDTV said that notices have also been issued to several individuals, including Singapore-based Devjyoti Hazarika, Tanmay Phukan, Bhaskar Dutta, Wajid Ahmed, Siddhartha Bora, Abhimanyu Talukdar, Rupkamal Saikia, and Pariksh Sharma, directing them to appear before investigators in Guwahati by October 6.

The Chief Minister also announced that the state government would no longer support events organised by Mahanta, who had led the North East Festival where Garg had performed in Singapore shortly before his death.

Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated artists, died on September 19 in Singapore, reportedly by drowning. His sudden death has sparked public mourning and widespread street protests across the state.
