Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a playful swipe at animal lovers amid the ongoing debate over the relocation of stray dogs in the national capital.

While addressing a gathering in Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan on Friday, PM Modi took a swipe at the hypocrisy of animal lovers, saying that many animal lovers in the country do not consider the cow to be an animal.

While sharing the incident of meeting a group of animal lovers, he said, “Recently, I met some animal lovers.” It prompted chuckles from the audience. PM Modi asked the crowd, “Why are you laughing? Our country has many animal lovers, and most of them do not consider the cow as an animal.”

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who was also present at the event, was seen chuckling at the remarks, as the audience broke into applause. The video has gone viral on social media.

PM Modi’s remarks were seen as a veiled jab at the selective ways some people express their love for animals.

His comments came days after the Supreme Court had ordered the removal of stray dogs from Delhi’s streets, which ignited a nationwide debate on balancing human safety and animal welfare. Citing a surge in dog-bite incidents and rabies-related deaths, many involving children and the elderly, the court directed the Delhi government to collect, sterilise, and permanently relocate strays to shelters within eight weeks.

However, the animal activists and celebrities called it unscientific and contrary to the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules 2023.

The massive outrage saw the case being reassigned to a three-judge bench by the Chief Justice. The new bench of the Supreme Court modified the previous order, directing the release of the street dogs to the same area from where they were picked up after vaccination and deworming.
