In a dramatic incident straight out of a film, an ex-husband kidnapped his former wife in a Bolero pick-up van in the GIDC area of Surat’s Sachin in Gujarat. on August 23. Police swung into action immediately, chasing him down and rescuing the woman from his custody near the Kherkuwa check-post in Chhota Udepur.

Police investigation revealed that the couple had divorced one-and-a-half years ago following frequent quarrels. They had two children, but one died in infancy. Custody of their surviving 2.5-year-old daughter was given to the father, Rakesh Kirad, after the separation.

While Rakesh wanted to reunite and restart married life, his ex-wife was unwilling. Despite repeated requests, she refused. Frustrated, Rakesh resorted to crime—kidnapping her while she was returning home from work.

How the Police Nabbed Him

At around 7:15 PM, the woman was forcibly dragged into the van by Rakesh. Her brother immediately alerted police, who registered a case and launched a manhunt. CCTV footage confirmed the kidnapper was none other than the ex-husband. Multiple teams were deployed, and with the help of human intelligence and surveillance, police tracked him to Chhota Udepur. He was arrested at the Kherkuwa check-post, and the woman was safely rescued.

According to police, Rakesh confessed he only wanted his wife back and believed abduction was the way to reconcile. Officers noted that while his desire to reunite was understandable, the method he chose was unlawful and ultimately landed him behind bars.

The Sachin GIDC police have arrested him, and further investigation is underway.
