Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said there was no vote theft and accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of spreading lies while responding to the latter’s “vote chori” campaign against the Election Commission.

Opposition parties have launched protests against the poll body, accusing it of aligning with the ruling NDA for “vote chori” (vote theft) in recently concluded elections nationwide.

“Rahul Gandhi has been constantly lying; he has been spreading lies for a long time. Now the state leaders have also started agreeing with him. But lies have no basis. Unless they go to the grassroots level and win the trust of the people, nothing will change,” said Fadnavis.

Fadnavis’s remarks ridiculing the INDIA bloc came after Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin, MNS president Raj Thackeray, extended support to Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi over the “vote-chori” allegations.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister hit out at Uddhav and Raj, who are together echoing the ‘vote chori’ allegations in Mumbai ahead of the upcoming local body polls.

“They are just trying to console their own hearts and were attempting to tell their workers that they were indeed winning, that there was a conspiracy in their defeat so that the workers don’t scatter… until they stop lying and insulting people, they cannot win,” said Fadnavis, a senior BJP leader.

Earlier, Fadnavis accused the opposition of trying to defame Maharashtra in Bihar, referring to their intensive protests across the state ahead of the crucial assembly elections later this year.

“There is no vote chori, in fact, I will say their (opposition) minds have been stolen… They are trying to defame Maharashtra in Bihar. But whatever they do, they can defame us neither in Bihar nor abroad.”
