Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has asked party leaders in Gujarat to “remove immediately” the “bad mangoes before the entire box is rotten”.

While inaugurating District Congress Presidents’ training camp in Junagadh on Wednesday, Kharge emphasised on strengthening the party at the grassroots and booth level, and underlined the importance of “discipline, dedication and ideological commitment” along with “reorienting with changing times” to save the democracy in the country.

He urged party leaders from Gujarat to take note of an internal report that has indicated that 19 out of 41 City and District units of the party are lagging in their performance. Mincing no words, Kharge asked the state party leaders to “remove immediately” the “bad mangoes before the entire box is rotten”.

Indian Express quoted senior party leaders as saying that Kharge was referring to an internal party report, which has been compiled based on the data for the last three months of programmes organised by various party units in matters directed by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) or Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC).

This comes in line with Congress’s stance on “showing the door” to “compromised” and “non-performing” leaders.

In March, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said that the party will remove leaders who were secretly working for the BJP.

“There are two types of people in the Gujarat Congress leadership and among workers. Those who are honest with people, who fight for them, respect them and have the ideology of the Congress in their heart. Then there are others who sit far away from the people, do not respect them, and half of whom are with the BJP,” he said.

In the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections, the Congress won only 17 of the 182 seats in the state with the BJP securing 156, , its biggest ever victory in the state. The Congress’s strength in the House dropped to 12 after the resignation of five MLAs.
