Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch the ‘Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyan’—translated as ‘Healthy Woman, Empowered Family’ campaign—on his birthday on September 17. As the name suggests, the nationwide drive has been designed to enhance healthcare services for women and children by ensuring improved access, quality care, and increased awareness.

According to two senior officials News18 spoke to, the scale of the campaign could even set a new world record, given the sheer number of health camps and activities planned simultaneously across states. “The participation of both government and private stakeholders will make this one of the largest-ever health awareness efforts globally,” an official said.

“BJP-ruled states, including Delhi, are set to organise a series of activities as part of the campaign. In the national capital, blood-donation camps will be held at Kartavya Path, along with the inauguration of new hospital blocks. A 15-day Sewa Pakhwada will also be observed nationwide,” said one of the senior government officials cited above, requesting anonymity.

Also, under the initiative, 75,000 health camps will be organised at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Community Health Centres (CHCs), and other healthcare institutions across the country. These camps will cater to the specific health needs of women and children, in line with the government’s vision of inclusive healthcare.

The Union Health Ministry is expected to roll out the finalised details of plans for the prime minister’s birthday and the related rollout of the campaign on Monday. “We are fine-tuning the final document with some details on the campaign, awaiting clearance from the Prime Minister’s office,” the first official source said, indicating the details were fixed in a meeting on Sunday.

Union health minister JP Nadda, in a post on X, welcomed the initiative and wrote that it reflects the prime minister’s longstanding commitment to inclusive growth. “…These camps will provide services tailored to the specific health needs of women and children, realising the government’s vision of inclusive healthcare.”

Campaign will help reach SDG goal targets by 2030

In addition, ‘Nutrition Month’ will be celebrated at Anganwadis across India to promote maternal and child health, nutrition, and overall well-being.

“Nutrition month at Anganwadis will focus on spreading awareness about balanced diets, maternal and child health, and preventing malnutrition. Activities will include health check-ups, growth monitoring, and education sessions for mothers and children,” said the second officer.

“These efforts are designed to take significant steps toward building healthier families and empowered communities. The campaign is being designed to focus on women and children. We have been seeing a sharp decline in maternal and infant mortality rates. This effort will fix the gap, and we will soon achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets.”

In India, Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) dropped significantly from 130 to 93 per lakh live births. Also, Neonatal Mortality Rate fell from 26 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 19 per 1,000 live births in 2021, and Under-Five Mortality Rate has dropped from 45 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 31 per 1,000 live births in 2021.

The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target is for reducing MMR to 70 per lakh live births by 2030, Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) to at least 12 and Under-5 Mortality Rate (U5MR) to at least 25.

“Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendramodi ji, the launch of the ‘Healthy Woman, Empowered Family’ campaign is a testament to his vision of holistic healthcare. This campaign will further strengthen women’s health, ensure healthier families, and empower communities across India,” Nadda said in his post, urging citizens and healthcare partners to actively participate.

The minister has also appealed to private hospitals and healthcare partners to join the effort. “I urge all private hospitals and partners associated with the healthcare sector to come forward and become an integral part of this public participation campaign. Inspired by the spirit of India First, let us all unite to further strengthen our collective efforts for the development of a developed India,” he wrote on X.

Overall, with healthcare access and nutrition as its central pillars, the campaign is being projected as a landmark initiative linking women’s well-being with the broader agenda of building a “Viksit Bharat” or developed India.
