The Patna High Court on Wednesday directed the Congress party to take down the AI-generated “deepfake” video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother from all social media platforms. The order was pronounced by acting Chief Justice PB Bajantari.

The Congress party came under fire after the Bihar unit of the party posted an AI-generated video on social media, which showed Prime Minister Narendra Modi dreaming about his late mother, Heeraben Modi.

The video sparked a political row as the BJP leaders slammed Congress.

The party had drawn ire earlier too, when a video of an unknown person at the stage of Congress-led’ Voter Adhikar Yatra‘ in Bihar’s Darbhanga, hurling abuses at PM Modi and his mother, surfaced on the internet.

Later, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Congress leaders for disseminating an AI-generated video that purportedly maligns the reputation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother.

The complaint was lodged by Sanket Gupta, the convenor of the BJP Delhi Election Cell.

The FIR cited multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, specifically Sections 18(2), 336(3), 336(4), 340(2), 352, 356(2), and 61(2).

However, the Congress has maintained that there has been no disrespect shown towards the Prime Minister or his mother.

Last week, the Bihar Congress had also mentioned it had initiated an internal inquiry into the video.

Top sources within the party said it will first determine who was responsible for sharing the content before taking further action.
