A prison in Bihar’s Madhubani district witnessed a rare and unusual event when it was temporarily transformed into a wedding venue. Inmates turned into “baraatis” as an accused married his widowed sister-in-law under court orders. The wedding was organised within the jail premises with the administration overseeing all arrangements.

The marriage took place after a legal procedure tied to a bail application. According to a report in Times Of India, the accused had sought bail in the Patna High Court, which directed that the lower court verify the marriage before granting it. Following this, the accused approached the local court for permission to conduct the wedding. Once approval was received, the jail authorities arranged the ceremony inside the prison.

Court-Ordered Marriage In Jail

As per the report, Jail Superintendent Om Prakash Shanti Bhushan stated that the wedding was conducted following the court’s order. On the instructions of Judge Syed Mohammad Fazlul Bari, the Madhubani Divisional Jail organised the marriage ceremony within its premises. Lawyers, family members and jail staff were present to witness the wedding while inmates attended the ceremony as “baraatis.”

Background Of The Case

The case involves Chotu Yadav alias Badri Yadav and Geeta Kumari. In 2022, Geeta’s husband, who was the elder brother of the accused, passed away. Following his death, Chhotu Yadav and Geeta Kumari reportedly became close and began living together.

According to ABP News, Chhotu Yadav reportedly sexually harassed her multiple times. Geeta became pregnant several times and after taking medication, terminated the pregnancies. When she refused to abort another pregnancy, the accused allegedly assaulted her.

To protect herself and her unborn child, Geeta left her home and filed a complaint at the local women’s police station. Following this, Chhotu Yadav was placed in judicial custody.

Wedding Ceremony Details

After the arrest, Chhotu Yadav filed a bail application which was only to be granted after he would have married Geeta Kumari. Following this, the marriage was conducted inside the jail premises.

They completed the traditional rituals with jail staff and family members acting as witnesses. The ceremony was organised entirely under the supervision of the Madhubani Divisional Jail. Present were the accused’s father Jainarayan Yadav, aunt Kaushalya Devi, advocates Vijay Kumar Bharti and Nitesh Gupta and Jailor Ram Vilas Das, ABP News reported.

Rare Occurrence Of Jail Marriages

Court-ordered marriages inside prisons are uncommon but do happen in India. One of the cases occurred in May when the Supreme Court facilitated a wedding between a man convicted of rape, sentenced to 10 years in prison and the survivor, who both expressed their willingness to marry. The court allowed the couple to exchange floral greetings in the courtroom. The moment, witnessed by lawyers and court officials, received applause from those present.

Earlier, in March, a similar court-ordered prison marriage took place in Bihar’s Siwan district. A young man, booked for forcible abduction, was directed by the court to marry his girlfriend inside the prison under Hindu marriage rites. The authorities made sure that the marriage was conducted with proper rituals.

In June 2023, two inmates convicted of murder at Bardhaman Central Correctional Home in West Bengal fell in love while serving their sentences. After developing a relationship in prison and informing their respective families, the couple was temporarily released on a five-day parole to solemnise their marriage according to the Muslim Marriage Act. While here there was no court order involved, the jail surely played a key role in bringing the couple together.
