Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hit out at the Opposition, citing an old provision in the Delhi Municipal Act that allowed the jailing of sanitation workers for a month if they failed to report for duty without notice.

Calling the law “draconian,” PM Modi said, “There was a law for my safai mitras which said if they didn’t show up for work, they could be sent to jail. These are the kinds of harsh laws they created and maintained.”

The Prime Minister asserted that his government is working to dismantle such exploitative rules. “It is Modi who is working to abolish these kinds of laws,” he declared.

Mounting his attack, PM Modi also accused the Opposition of hypocrisy over their public posturing on constitutional values.

“These people who dance while holding the Constitution above their heads — this is how they disrespect the Constitution. This is how they used to trample on the sentiments of Baba Saheb Ambedkar,” he said.

His remarks come amid an intensifying political war of words over Ambedkar’s legacy, social justice, and the protection of constitutional rights.

The Prime Minister inaugurated two National Highways projects in Delhi, blaming previous governments, such as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress, for bringing the national capital to ruination.

The Prime Minister hailed the inauguration of the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), saying Delhi would become a model of ‘Viksit Bharat’.

The Prime Minister also underscored the difficulties faced by the Rekha Gupta-led BJP government in rectifying the mistakes of the previous governments.

“I know how difficult it is for the new BJP government to bring Delhi out of the ever-mounting troubles of the past. However, I am confident that the team you have chosen in Delhi will work hard and pull the city out of the problems it has been suffering for decades.”
