The US government shutdown has begun to impact the US Embassy in India. Due to the midnight shutdown in the US, the US Embassy in India stopped updating its X account on Wednesday, October 1.

On Wednesday morning, the embassy clarified on its official X handle that due to a lapse in appropriations, the account will not be regularly updated until full operations are restored.

However, essential safety and security information will still be shared. The X account will resume normal updates once the shutdown ends.

The embassy’s X post read, “Due to the expiration of appropriations, this X account will not be regularly updated until full operations are resumed, except for essential security information.”

The post further stated, “At this time, scheduled passport and visa services at US embassies and consulates in the United States and abroad will continue, as the situation warrants, during the lapse in appropriations. For information about our services and operational status, visit http://travel.state.gov.”

What’s Happening In The US?

The federal government shutdown began in the US on October 1, 2025, because the budget allocation deadline expired due to the inability of Congress to reach a consensus on a funding bill. Republicans and Democrats are at odds over bills covering health, immigration, and domestic plans. President Trump’s meetings were also inconclusive. Consequently, millions of federal employees have been sent on leave without pay, national parks and museums (Smithsonian) may be closed, air travel may be delayed, and tax refunds may be withheld.
