As PM Narendra Modi celebrates his 75th birthday, the countdown to a pre-Diwali cheer has begun.

This is the wait for the new goods and services tax (GST) regime to be set in motion and bring down the prices of many items for aam aadmi.

Cars, farm equipment, several food items, items of daily use are all set to get cheaper. The PM had made this promise during his August 15 speech from Red Fort.

The story does not end with the GST reforms. It is a part of the long thread of reforms being initiated by the government.

The prediction from many rating agencies like FITCH, S&P and Moody’s has been positive. They have estimated that the GDP growth would exceed 6.5%. The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) assessment is that it could be at 7.5% too.

Driven by the tariff turmoil, the PM has made long-term plans. In fact, as per sources, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was asked by the PM for suggestions for slashing GST rates. It’s been a work in progress for over a year and when the rates were finalised and approved by the GST council, the PM told the FM: “Good…kaam ho gaya, the work is done.”

But the hallmark of the PM’s tenure even in the third term has been the twin mantra of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Swadeshi’. In the long run, the endeavour is to ensure that the imports are cut down. Given the uncertainty in the global arena, the PM feels one should not take too many chances and be self-reliant. This is why the stress on self-reliance and to ensure that MSMEs or small and medium sectors do well. Hence also the stress on swadeshi or local for vocal. This is to ensure that Indian brands compete aggressively with foreign brands and do well.

The recent incident of Prada copying Kolhapuri chappals and selling them at exorbitant rate is just one example which shows that the world is inspired by Indian products but rarely gives us our due. The PM wants to change this.

Moreover, the UPI transactions have gone up remarkably not just in India but also worldwide, which is being seen as a success story with many countries looking at it as the go-to thing.

With our exports increasing and India standing up against any bulldozing, it’s clear that India is looking ahead at many more golden days to come.
