Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday highlighted the wide-ranging benefits of the government’s latest GST reforms, contrasting them with the Opposition’s criticism. “Whether it is making many dairy products GST-free, or bringing an unprecedented reduction on everyday essentials like soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair oil, and shampoo — the #NextGenGST reform has delivered happiness to households across every section of society,” Shah said.

He added that zero GST on life and health insurance, senior citizen policies, 33 life-saving drugs and diagnostic kits, along with reduced GST on medical, dental and veterinary devices, would bring “historic savings for citizens.”

Shah further said the reforms have boosted farmer confidence and will make vehicle purchases easier, adding, “This GST reform will also boost self-reliance. Citizens are urged to embrace indigenous products in their daily lives.”

The ruling BJP also went on the offensive against Congress and other Opposition leaders for dismissing the reforms. Responding to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s criticism, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said, “I think Mallikarjun Kharge needs to understand the entire taxation system once again. There is an economic principle — lesser the tax, higher the revenue. This principle is accepted across the world. In the time to come, all State governments and Central government will get revenue through this. Kharge ji has little knowledge, so he is unable to understand this math. Since he just has to criticise PM Modi, he is saying this.”

Echoing that view, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya attacked Opposition leaders for what he called blind criticism of a people-centric reform.

“There are leaders like Akhilesh Yadav, Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav who have to oppose even something which is good. The benefits to 140 crore people due to GST savings can be seen neither by Rahul Gandhi nor Akhilesh Yadav or Tejashwi Yadav… They cannot welcome it but opposing a decision that will benefit 140 crore people of the country is foolishness and negative politics,” Maurya said.
