Notorious gangster Kartik Baggan, who was facing several cases related to gang violence, was shot dead by armed men in Punjab’s Ludhiana, the police said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday when Baggan, a resident of Ghati Mohalla, along with his friend Sarvan, was heading home when they were cornered by assailants who opened fire at them in Ludhiana’s Sundar Nagar area.

Sarvan, who works as a car washer, said that the assailants, who were on bikes, opened fire from the back, hitting him, which made them both fall. The assailants then shot five bullets at Baggan before leaving.

Baggan died on the spot, while Sarvan is undergoing treatment at a local hospital, ADCP Davinder Chaudhary told news agency PTI.

As per the police, the incident is suspected to be the fallout of an old rivalry between two groups.

Both the accused, who have multiple criminal cases registered against them, have been identified, and efforts are on to arrest them, the officer said. “We are scanning CCTV footage of the area to trace the assailants. An FIR has been registered against them.”

Meanwhile, a rival group by the name of ‘Gopi Ghanshampura gang’ allegedly took responsibility for the murder on social media, reported Indian Express.

In a purported social media post, they said, “We (Donny Bal, Mohabbat Randhawa, Amar Khabbe, Prabh Dasuwal and Kaushal Chaudhary) take the responsibility for the murder of Kartik Baggan. We killed him as he used to keep enmity with our dear brothers and used to abuse them on phone. Whosoever will go against our brothers will meet same fate and their death is the only solution. Whosoever will do so, no matter sitting in which country, he will get the same result soon.”

Earlier in June 2023, Baggan, said to be a member of the notorious Puneet Bains gang, was shot at by his rivals on Benjamin Road and was admitted to the CMC hospital. As he was wanted in criminal cases, before he could be arrested, he had fled from the hospital after dodging the police.

Baggan was facing trial in multiple criminal cases, including attempted murder, attack on cops, and illegal possession of weapons. As per the Times of India report, Baggan had frequently posted images of himself with weapons. He had also produced videos of himself being brought to court for trial in the attempted murder case.
