Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday underscored India’s unique and timeless role in offering the world the path of dharma, which he described as a universal law of the universe. Bhagwat said that dharma is not an Indian invention but a natural and inherent truth. He stressed that its essence is not about preaching or conversion but about living by example. “Dharma is never about conversion. What it needs is a living example,” he said, stating that India’s duty is to be a model of dharma so that the world may follow by inspiration, not compulsion.

The RSS chief also reflected on India’s history of external influences, noting that while people from outside brought their own ideologies, some among Indians accepted them. He emphasised that Hindus have their own rich traditions, philosophies, and paths, and it is essential to bridge the distances that have arisen from adopting foreign ways. He called for a movement of “chintan” or reflection, to create living examples of positivity and goodwill, taking everyone along despite diversity.

To achieve this, Bhagwat asked everyone to follow the Panch Parivartan, an RSS way of life.

Family Nurturing: Bhagwat expressed concern that children are being disconnected from family values due to excessive mobile use and a culture of privacy. He stressed the importance of simple traditions like eating meals together and talking to each other to foster a sense of family.

Social Harmony: He reiterated the need for untouchability to disappear completely, insisting that temples, water, and all shared resources belong to everyone. He urged an end to all forms of discrimination and division in villages.

Economic Self-Reliance: Promoting the principle of “swadeshi”, he encouraged people to embrace home-cooked meals over eating out and to make products like homemade lemonade instead of buying carbonated drinks, arguing that this would support indigenous industries.

Environment-Friendly Lifestyle: The RSS chief also stressed the importance of protecting the environment and how it is inherently a part of Hindu ideology.

Fundamental Duties: Bhagwat also offered clear guidance on how individuals should respond to provocation and insults. He urged people not to take the law into their own hands if they feel insulted or if their faith is disrespected. Instead, he advised them to go to the police and, in cases of inaction, to pursue legal action and spearhead a movement. While acknowledging that self-defence is everyone’s right if one’s life is in danger, he firmly cautioned against resorting to violence like throwing stones or burning tires. He stated that such actions only play into the hands of those with ulterior motives.
