A chilling murder in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar has shocked the city after police revealed that a father allegedly used his 17-year-old son to kill a long-time rival, timing the attack just one day before the boy’s 18th birthday to exploit juvenile laws.

The victim, 56-year-old property dealer Lakhpat Singh from Begumpur, was attacked during his morning walk at Vijay Mandal Park around 6.30 a.m. on Friday. According to deputy commissioner of police (South) Ankit Chauhan as quoted by HT, Singh was first bludgeoned with a cricket bat and then shot with a countrymade pistol. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre but was declared dead on arrival.

Investigators said the father-son duo had been tracking Singh’s movements for days. CCTV footage showed the accused waiting outside the park on a black Hero Splendor motorcycle with its number plate removed and their faces covered. After chasing Singh inside, they carried out the deadly assault before fleeing.

What do we know about the feud?

Police believe the murder stemmed from a bitter rivalry dating back to 2016, when Singh allegedly assaulted a 47-year-old property dealer, leaving him bedridden for nine months. Cross-cases were filed, but the hostility never subsided. Officers said the accused confessed to seeking revenge for the old attack and admitted to multiple past offences.

In a calculated move, the father chose the day before his son’s 18th birthday for the murder, hoping the boy’s juvenile status would shield him from harsher punishment. The teenager, who had been monitoring Singh’s routine, was arrested on Saturday evening and led police to his father. The father was later apprehended and confessed to planning the crime.

Police recovered the motorcycle and a broken cricket bat from the scene, though the pistol is still missing.
