A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has triggered heavy rains in Odisha and West Bengal, with the India Meteorological Department issuing rain alerts in the states as the depression moves closer to the coast.

Odisha was particularly affected as widespread rain and waterlogging left one person dead and two people missing due to landslides, officials told news agency PTI. The intensity of the rain increased as the depression crossed the state’s coast near Gopalpur in Ganjam district on Thursday evening.

The IMD said the deep depression over south coastal Odisha moved towards the coast with a speed of 10 kmph on Thursday and lay centred about 80 km near Gopalpur (Odisha), 130 km east of Bhawanipatra and 170 km north of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh).

It was likely to move north-northwestwards across South Odisha and weaken gradually into a depression by the morning of October 3.

The weather agency said the sea condition was likely to be very rough to rough over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and along the Andhra Pradesh-West Bengal coasts till 9 am on Friday. It advised fishermen to not venture into these coastal areas.

A red alert was issued across seven districts of Odisha, along with an orange warning for 16 districts and a yellow alert for seven. The BJP administration deployed disaster management teams and machinery in vulnerable districts to tackle the situation, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast till October 3, officials told PTI.

IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra said certain parts of Odisha would experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on Thursday night, and the downpours would continue till 8:30 am on Friday. The state government deployed men and machinery in vulnerable districts to tackle the situation.

Rains Hit West Bengal

Meanwhile, celebrations on the final day of Durga Puja – Bijaya Dashami – were disrupted by intermittent rains. Several spells of rain lashed south Bengal, including Kolkata, following the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD had predicted that heavy to very heavy rain was very likely to occur at one or two places over South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts of south Bengal, while heavy rain was expected at one or two places over Kolkata and Howrah till Friday morning.

It said that heavy rain is also very likely to occur at one or two places over North 24 Parganas, Bankura, Hooghly, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman and Purulia districts of South Bengal till the morning on October 3.

The deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal had already caused heavy rain in the coastal areas of Bengal, with the seaside tourist town of Digha recording the state’s highest rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Thursday at 102 mm.
