A cloudburst incident hit Uttarakhand’s Chamoli on Friday night leading to widespread damage across multiple locations, and several feared missing. The incident has resulted in debris flows affecting local markets, roads, and residential areas.

Heavy debris has entered the Tharali market and surrounding areas of Kotdeep Tehsil, damaging houses and burying several vehicles.

In Sagwad village, a girl is reported to be trapped under debris inside a collapsed building.

Additionally, shops in the Chepardon market have suffered structural damage due to the debris flow.

The heavy rainfall and resulting debris have led to road blockages, with the Tharali-Gwaldam road closed at Minggadera and the Tharali-Sagwada road also rendered impassable.

In response, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team has been dispatched from Gauchar to carry out rescue and relief operations.

Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari has confirmed the situation and stated that teams are actively working at the affected sites. Efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and ensure the safety of local residents.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday said in a post on X that he is constant touch with the local administration.

“Late last night, a tragic report of a cloudburst was received in the Tharali area of Chamoli district. The district administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations,” read a post.

“In this regard, I am in constant contact with the local administration and am personally closely monitoring the situation. I pray to God for everyone’s safety,” it added.
