Shilpa had been married to Praveen for about two-and-a-half years.

A 27-year-old techie- Shilpa- was found hanging at her home in south Bengaluru’s Suddaguntepalya on Tuesday night. Her parents filed a police complaint alleging that she died by suicide after being constantly harassed for dowry, NDTV reported.

Shilpa had been married to Praveen, also a former software professional, for about two-and-a-half years. The couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old child. Shilpa had completed her Bachelor of Engineering and worked as a software engineer at Infosys while Praveen worked at Oracle before quitting his job a year after marriage to start a food business.

Allegations Of Dowry Demands

According to the complaint filed by Shilpa’s parents, Praveen’s family had initially demanded ₹15 lakh in cash, 150 grams of gold jewellery and household articles at the time of marriage. Despite meeting these demands, Praveen’s family allegedly pressured Shilpa for more money and valuables after the wedding.

Her parents also claimed that she was subjected to cruel taunts about her appearance.

“You are dark and not a good match for my son. Leave him, we will find him a better bride,” her mother-in-law allegedly told her, as per the complaint.

Six months ago, Praveen’s family allegedly demanded another ₹5 lakh to support his business, which Shilpa’s family says they provided. They alleged that repeated harassment over dowry ultimately drove her to take her life.

The Suddaguntepalya Police registered a case of dowry harassment and unnatural death. Praveen has been detained for questioning. A police official told NDTV, “All the allegations have been made by the victim’s family. We have registered a case of dowry death as per protocol. The husband is being questioned and we are trying to ascertain the veracity of the allegations.”
