Sendil Palani, a senior finance executive at Tesla, has stepped down from the company after nearly 17 years, marking the end of one of the longest tenures among its leadership team.

Palani announced his departure on March 9, 2026, through a post on X, stating that his “latest chapter at Tesla has come to a close.”

Responding to the announcement, Tesla CEO Elon Musk thanked Palani for his long association with the company, writing: “Thanks for an epic contribution over many years.”

Most recently serving as Vice-President of Finance, Palani played a key role in Tesla’s financial operations and growth strategy during a period that saw the company evolve from a struggling startup to one of the world’s most prominent electric vehicle manufacturers. Palani joined Tesla’s finance team in 2009, shortly after the company narrowly survived a severe financial crisis during the global economic downturn in 2008. Recalling those early days, he said the company “barely survived Christmas of 2008,” referring to a time when Tesla faced the possibility of collapse.

During his time at the company, Palani held multiple roles across finance and operations, including Senior Financial Analyst, Manufacturing Project Manager, Senior Finance Manager, Director, and Senior Director, before rising to the vice-president position.

His career progression coincided with Tesla’s transformation into a global automaker and technology company expanding into areas such as electric mobility, software and artificial intelligence.

Palani has an academic background that combines engineering and business. He holds a degree from The Wharton School and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

In his farewell message, Palani reflected on Tesla’s mission, describing it as “ambitious and complex,” and praised the company’s workforce for its high level of commitment and collaboration.

Palani’s departure adds to a series of leadership changes at Tesla in recent years, as the company navigates intensifying competition in the global electric vehicle market while expanding into new technology areas.
