Mahindra targets 7,000 e-vehicle sales a month by end of fiscal

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) expects to sell around 7,000 electric vehicles (EVs) per month by the end of the current fiscal, up from the 4,000–5,000 units it currently delivers each month, a senior company executive said on Thursday.

According to PTI, the auto maker, which expanded its EV portfolio with the launch of the seven-seater XEV 9S, aims for electric models to account for around 25 per cent of its total volumes by 2027–2028.

“We are moving to an operating production capacity of 8,000 electric vehicles per month by the fiscal end, out of which we hope to sell 7,000 units,” said Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO – Auto and Farm Sectors.

Mahindra manufactures its born-electric vehicles at its Chakan facility. The company has sold over 30,000 units of the BE 6 and XEV 9 in the past seven months, generating revenue of around ₹8,000 crore.

Jejurikar said the company is working to expand charging infrastructure, with plans to install around 1,000 charging points by 2027, focusing on high-traffic locations.

Export plans to progress cautiously

On exports, he said Mahindra will follow a gradual strategy. “We have a path to exports for the electric SUV portfolio. We will go to right-hand-drive markets first and then look at left-hand-drive markets depending on the response. It’s not something we will rush into,” he said.

He added that Mahindra is evaluating solutions for end-of-life batteries. Its electric three-wheeler business, which is older, is expected to face battery disposal challenges earlier than the SUV lineup. “We clearly are working on solutions required for battery recycling. We have a team working on it,” Jejurikar noted.

Supply-chain de-risking and PLI eligibility

Jejurikar said Mahindra is de-risking its EV supply chain with multiple mitigation measures. He confirmed that all trims of the XEV 9 are eligible for the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

He added that the company plans to apply for PLI certification for the BE 6 in the coming quarter, with approvals expected early in the next financial year. “When 9S production starts, we will apply for that as well,” he said.

The XEV 9S is priced between ₹19.95 lakh and ₹29.45 lakh (ex-showroom).
