Hyundai Motor Company said the all-new Hyundai Nexo has received a five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP safety assessment, reinforcing the automaker’s focus on safety across its electrified vehicle portfolio.

The hydrogen fuel-cell electric SUV achieved the highest possible score under the European New Car Assessment Programme, joining Hyundai’s IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 9, all of which have previously secured five-star ratings.

Euro NCAP evaluates vehicles across four categories — adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable road user protection and safety assist technologies. The Nexo recorded strong results across all parameters, including 90 per cent in adult occupant protection and 85 per cent in child occupant protection.

Adult occupant tests

In adult occupant tests, the vehicle’s passenger compartment remained stable in frontal offset and full-width barrier tests, with good protection for critical body regions of both driver and passengers. The SUV also achieved maximum points in side-impact testing and demonstrated effective far-side occupant protection with its centre airbag. Whiplash protection for front and rear occupants was rated as good in rear-impact assessments.

Child occupant tests
Child occupant protection was also rated highly, with six- and ten-year-old dummies showing good protection in frontal and side-impact tests. The vehicle includes a front passenger airbag deactivation function with clear status indication and compatibility with approved child restraint systems.

Euro NCAP also highlighted the Nexo’s advanced safety features, including an eCall system, post-crash secondary impact prevention and verified door and window operability in the event of vehicle submergence.

The latest rating builds on Hyundai’s track record in fuel-cell vehicle safety. The earlier-generation Nexo was the first hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle tested by Euro NCAP in 2018 and also achieved a five-star rating under the standards in place at the time.
