The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday dismissed as “fake” social media claims asking people to donate money to a government-designated bank account in connection with the case of Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse on death row in Yemen.
The MEA’s official fact-check handle on X, MEA FactCheck, shared a screenshot of a post by X user Dr KA Paul, who called for donations to “Save Nimisha.”

The post, dated August 19, included a poster with the slogan Save Nimisha Priya and displayed what appeared to be bank transaction details.
Dr KA Paul, an evangelist and founder of the Global Peace Initiative, claimed in the post: “Donate directly to Save Nimisha to the Government of India account designate. We need 8.3 crore rupees.”
Responding to this, MEA FactCheck posted, “We have seen claims being made on social media seeking monetary contributions into a GoI designated bank account in the Nimisha Priya case. This is a fake claim.”
The ministry made it clear that no such official fundraising effort has been initiated by the Government of India.
Nimisha Priya, a 38-year-old nurse from Kollengode in Kerala’s Palakkad district, was convicted of murdering a Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in July 2017. She was sentenced to death in 2020 and her final appeal was rejected in 2023.
Her execution was originally scheduled for July 16, 2024, but it was postponed following intervention by Indian authorities. She remains imprisoned in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, which is currently under the control of Houthi rebels.
On August 1, the MEA stated that India continues to extend all possible help in Priya’s case. It also confirmed that discussions are ongoing with friendly governments to find a “mutually agreeable solution.”
On July 17, India said it was in touch with Yemeni authorities and was working through diplomatic channels to secure relief in the matter.
