When Bollywood’s ‘golden trio’ teased Jawaharlal Nehru

When Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar teased Jawaharlal Nehru about ‘stealing’ Lady Mountbatten’s heart: ‘He blushed and laughed’

Bollywood’s legendary stars, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand, were the ultimate icons of the 1950s, ruling the silver screen with charm, talent and unmatched charisma. Together, they formed a trio that was as legendary off-screen as on it. But even these cinematic giants couldn’t resist a little mischief when they visited India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. During that memorable meeting, the stars boldly teased him about a long‑rumoured romance with Lady Edwina Mountbatten, leaving both the Prime Minister and themselves in fits of laughter.

When Bollywood stars met Jawaharlal Nehru

In the book ‘Raj Kapoor: The One and Only Showman’, presented by Ritu Nanda, Raj recalled, “Once Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and I were invited to spend some time with the Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, at his Teen Murti residence.” At that time, Nehru had “just recovered from an unfortunate stroke and looked mellow and somewhat resigned.”Despite this, the moment he welcomed the trio, his spirits lifted. The ‘Shree 420’ actor noted that Nehru was “in a great mood” as he held the three stars in his arms.

Nehru appeared mellow but welcomed warmly

Nehru shared stories of his travels around the world, and the actors listened, spellbound. “We all opened up, as if we had found a long-lost friend and he reacted and reciprocated in a similar fashion, with childlike joy,” Raj wrote. The ‘Mera Naam Joker’ actor further added that Nehru “was perhaps looking for a moment of escape from his overburdened life that was full of having to deal with the political pressure of one-upmanship and sycophancy around him.” For a brief while, the formal walls of politics vanished, and the Prime Minister seemed just another friend, enjoying a chat.

Bollywood stars dared to ask playful personal questions

Feeling at ease, the three stars decided to tease Nehru about his personal life. Raj wrote, “We asked him, ‘We hear you used to be very popular and amorously attracted to ladies wherever you went, Panditji!’ Not as popular as you fellows are!’ was his quick retort with his famous smile.”Encouraged by his light-hearted answer, they pushed further. “We asked, ‘Your devastating smile stole the heart of Lady Mountbatten… is it true, sir?’ He blushed, enjoying the question and laughing it away saying, ‘I love all these stories about me!’”

Dilip Kumar added humour to the conversation

Seeing Nehru respond candidly, Dilip Kumar couldn’t resist. Kapoor recalled, “‘But they all say she herself confessed her weakness for you!’ Dilip Kumar joined in, in a very humorous strain. ‘People made me believe in those stories’ He laughed again light-heartedly.”Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand were more than just actors, they were icons who shaped Hindi cinema in the 1950s and beyond. Their talent, charisma, and camaraderie made them legendary both on and off-screen. Together, they could charm audiences, spark laughter, and even playfully tease a Prime Minister, showing their boldness and warmth. Decades later, their films and stories continue to captivate, reminding us why they remain Bollywood’s unforgettable ‘golden trio.’ Go to Source
