In his opening remarks, Yi said the setbacks India and China faced in the past were “not in our interest” and that “stability has now been restored at the borders”.

“I am very pleased to meet you again in New Delhi for this round of talks between the special representatives of China and India on the boundary question,” Yi said.

“The setbacks that we faced in the last few years were not in our interest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met in Kazan. We are happy to share that stability has now been restored at the borders,” the Chinese Foreign Minister said.

Also speaking on Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, Wang Yi said, “We welcome PM Modi’s visit to China for the SCO.”

“History and reality prove that a healthy relationship between India and China serves the long-term interests of both countries,” he added.

During the meeting, Doval underlined that India and China have “profited a lot since Kazan”, referring to the decision taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS Summit in Kazan to revive dialogue mechanisms.

He noted that the border has remained “quiet” with “peace and tranquillity” prevailing over the past nine months.

The NSA expressed optimism that the latest round of SR talks would be “successful like the last one” and stressed the significance of the discussion in light of PM Modi’s upcoming visit to China.

He also highlighted that India and China are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations this year.

The Chinese Foreign Minister is in India primarily to hold the SR dialogue on the boundary question with Ajit Doval.

Both Doval and Wang serve as the designated SRs for the border dialogue mechanism.

Doval travelled to China in December last and held the 23rd round of talks with Wang, weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to revive various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides at their meeting in the Russian city of Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

Wang Yi is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narender Modi later in the day.
