Malayalam cinema is gearing up to witness one of its most historic reunions, after a gap of more than three decades.Legendary filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan and iconic actor Mammootty are teaming up again. This team up happens after 31 years after their last collaboration ‘Vidheyan’ in 1994. Speaking to the Manorama News, Adoor confirmed that pre-production for the upcoming film has begun, and that Mammootty will not only play the lead role but will also produce the project under Mammootty’s production house. The director said that the character in his script naturally led him to think of Mammootty and that no other actor entered his mind for the role.

Adoor confirms Mammootty as the first and only choice

Adoor revealed that while shaping the screenplay, he instinctively pictured Mammootty in the central role. There was never a moment of doubt or second thought. “Mammootty is the perfect match for the character,” he said, adding that the process of casting the supporting roles is currently in progress.

Speculation of a Thakazhi adaptation ignites excitement

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the film may be based on Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai’s acclaimed novel ‘Randidangazhi’. The story powerfully portrays the struggles of exploited agricultural labourers of Kuttanad, their awakening of class consciousness and their collective fight for dignity.

Adoor’s comeback and Mammootty’s award-winning legacy together again

Adoor’s last feature film was ‘Pinneyum’ in 2016 which was followed by the short fiction Sukhantyam in 2019.The duo’s earlier collaborations such as Mathilukal, Anantaram and Vidheyan remain evergreen classics. ‘Mathilukal’ brought Mammootty the National Award for Best Actor, while Vidheyan earned him the honour again a few years later. On the other hand, Mammootty is gearing up for the release of ‘Kalamkaval’ which is set for December 5.
