Stellantis expects over 5% car sales growth on GST 2.0 boost; eyes four-fold jump in exports next year

Stellantis India expects the passenger vehicle industry to grow more than 5 per cent this year on the back of GST 2.0 reforms, which have renewed demand particularly for small cars, a senior company executive told PTI.

The automaker, which operates the Jeep and Citroën brands in India, also plans to scale up component exports to ₹10,000 crore next year from the current ₹4,000 crore. The Hosur powertrain and gearbox plant — along with its Bengaluru unit — is central to this export push, producing up to 3.74 lakh gearboxes and 3 lakh engines annually for Stellantis’s global operations.

“Prior to GST 2.0, there was hardly any growth in car sales,” Shailesh Hazela, Managing Director and CEO of Stellantis India, said. “But with GST, the growth percentage will be more than 5 per cent for the auto industry.”

Hazela said demand picked up in the last eight days of September, when GST 2.0 was rolled out, and continued through October. The reforms have especially helped buyers move from two-wheelers to four-wheelers. “The small car segment is getting the most benefit, and I believe this trend will continue,” he added.

Post GST rate cut impact

Stellantis has also gained from reduced GST rates, particularly for its Citroën models priced below ₹13 lakh, and on Jeep vehicles, which have become cheaper by about 10 per cent. The company sold 1,426 units in October, supported by festive demand and tax reforms.

Hazela said Stellantis India plans to expand its domestic operations with new products, a broader retail footprint and higher exports. The company is focusing on agility and innovation to stay competitive, he added.

Stellantis’s Hosur plant, which boasts nearly 90 per cent localisation through 138 suppliers—mostly in Tamil Nadu—produces powertrains for models such as Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa and Opel Mokka. About 95 per cent of its output is exported. The plant accounts for around 5 per cent of Stellantis’s global production across its 44 manufacturing facilities.

In India, the automaker’s portfolio includes the Citroën C3 and EC3, C3 Aircross and Aircross X SUVs, the Basalt and Basalt X coupé-SUVs, all based on its Smart Car architecture, along with the C5 Aircross.

Hazela said Stellantis has invested ₹11,000 crore in its India business so far, with future investments guided by capital expenditure requirements rather than demand conditions.
