Ahaan says his only privilege was seeing the industry up close

Ahaan Panday says he ‘comes from behind a fence’; his only privilege was seeing the industry up close, ‘Chikki Panday is not a star’

Ahaan Panday has emerged as one of the most talked-about newcomers of the year, following the release of Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara. Son of businessman Chikki Panday and former model Deanne Panday, and nephew of actor Chunky Panday, Ahaan has often been labelled a ‘star kid’—despite neither of his parents being Bollywood actors. His family’s close ties with the film industry, including his father’s long-standing friendship with Shah Rukh Khan and Ahaan’s own bond with Aryan Khan, have only amplified that perception. But in a new interview with GQ, the young actor shared that he has always felt like he wasn’t fully a part of the industry circle.

Ahaan on privilege and perception

When asked whether star kids are judged more harshly today, Ahaan said, “I can’t speak from experience because Chikki Panday is not a star. But if I have to speak on behalf of my friends, I think each has their own trials and tribulations.”He was then asked whether he feels unfairly clubbed with Bollywood star children. Ahaan responded, “I’ve always felt like the place I come from is behind a fence. I can reach out through it, but I can’t quite touch what’s on the other side. Even as a child, I felt that way—surrounded by the film industry, but never really in it. What I consider my privilege is that I got to see it all up close. Being around people who were excelling in the industry taught me a lot from the other side of that fence.”

Parents were hesitant about his acting dreams

Ahaan revealed that his parents were initially unsure about him joining the movies, having witnessed Chunky Panday’s highs and lows over the decades. Their apprehension, however, didn’t deter him. He recalled giving his first audition at the age of 16—surprisingly, without any fear.“My parents didn’t have expectations either; they thought acting was just a hobby. They had no idea I could even act. When they saw the film, they were emotional, not because it did well, but because they realised I genuinely love what I’m doing. That made them extremely happy,” he shared. After impressing audiences and critics with Saiyaara, Ahaan is gearing up for his next big project. He will soon be seen in Ali Abbas Zafar’s upcoming action film, backed by YRF, where he stars opposite Sharvari.
