‘Princess of Wales’ returns: Kate Middleton calls on businesses to put people first in her first speech in two years

‘Princess of Wales’ returns: Kate Middleton calls on businesses to put people first in her first speech in two years

Princess Kate Middleton delivered her first public speech in two years at the Future Workforce Summit in London. The appearance marked her return to regular duties after announcing her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 and her remission earlier this year.In her remarks, the Princess of Wales concentrated on early childhood, a long-standing area of her public work. She said that a child’s earliest years have a lasting impact on adult life and described love and stable relationships as factors that contribute to resilience and wellbeing.

Kate Middleton’s appeal to business leaders

Kate urged business leaders to balance financial goals with policies that support families and caregiving. She said companies should value “time and tenderness” alongside productivity and argued that profitability and positive social impact do not have to be at odds. She encouraged workplaces to consider how their structures and expectations affect parents and young children, particularly in the early years. The event brought together senior UK business figures involved with the Royal Foundation Business Taskforce for Early Childhood. The taskforce, launched in 2023, aims to encourage companies to invest more in early childhood initiatives and improve conditions for families. The foundation’s stated goal is to reach more than one million babies and young children by 2026.Kate delivered her speech as part of her gradual return to public engagements. Her appearance signalled a continuation of her early-years campaign following her treatment and reduced schedule over the past two years. In March 2024, Kate publicly announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer and would step back from royal duties while undergoing treatment. She completed chemotherapy later that year and confirmed her remission in early 2025. During this period, her public appearances were limited to occasional video messages, making her speech at the summit her most significant in-person engagement since her diagnosis.
