Delhi On High Alert As Yamuna Water Levels Rise: Evacuations Underway In Low-Lying Areas

Delhi is on high alert as the Yamuna River approaches critical levels, posing a serious flood threat to low-lying areas. Correspondent Ahmed Bilal reported live from the Yamuna bridge that the current water level has reached 204.93 meters, surpassing the warning threshold and nearing the evacuation level of 206 meters. Authorities have issued urgent advisories for residents in approximately 24 villages and low-lying neighborhoods to move to safer locations immediately. The Hathnikund barrage in Haryana released over 17,800 cubic feet per second of water last night, and ongoing rainfall in the upstream regions continues to raise the river level. Boat clubs and local authorities have deployed 25–30 motorboats around the river to conduct continuous monitoring, issue announcements, and assist residents in need. Critical residential zones, including areas near Akshardham Temple and Yamuna Bazaar, are expected to face waterlogging once the 206-meter mark is crossed. The Meteorological Department forecasts light to moderate rainfall in Delhi over the coming week, further impacting river levels. Authorities are coordinating evacuation efforts and setting up temporary shelters to ensure public safety. Residents are urged to stay vigilant, follow official instructions, and avoid the riverbanks until the situation stabilizes.
