Hearts and kidneys are frequently the first things that come to mind when discussing organ donation. However, tissue donation is another amazing gift that changes and saves lives. Although they are not organs, tissues like skin, bones, corneas, and heart valves are crucial in aiding in the healing process following severe illnesses, injuries, and even blindness. A medical miracle rebuilds bodies and gives us hope, in ways we are not aware of right away. Dr. VS Prakash, HOD & Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiology, Ramaiah Institute of Cardiac Sciences shares all you need to know:

What is Tissue Donation?

Tissue donation is the process of retrieving and transplanting tissues from a deceased or living donor to a recipient in need. In contrast to organs, which has to be transplanted immediately, many tissues can be processed and kept in tissue banks for later use. This makes it possible to use donated tissues more widely. According to the Government Of Assam Health & Family Welfare, one tissue donor can help in saving almost 50 lives.

Types of Tissue Donated

There is a diverse variety of tissues that can be donated. Each tissue serves a unique purpose:

• Corneas (Eye Donation)

Helps in restoring eye sights of individuals who suffer from corneal blindness.

• Bone

It can be used to substitute cancerous bones which would prevent amputation and will help in regaining flexibility.

• Skin

It is used to help victims of severe burns and acid attacks heal and recover through grafting.

• Heart Valves

It helps in repairing cardiac defects and saving the lives of patients with heart conditions.

• Tendons, Ligaments, and Veins

Provided largely to a range of orthopedic and surgical procedures, helping the recipients’ to live better.

Ultimately, tissue donation is a testament to human empathy. Helping people and giving the needful the second chance to be healthy and happy is what we call as humanity. By increasing awareness and participation, we can assist in bridging the supply and demand divide, ensuring that more people get these life-saving transplants.
