Drake’s massive Spotify numbers under scrutiny in new fake-streams class action

Drake’s massive Spotify numbers under scrutiny in new fake-streams class action

In a major development shaking the digital music world, Spotify is at the center of a federal class-action lawsuit filed in California, accusing the streaming giant of allowing billions of fraudulent streams to artificially boost rapper Drake’s numbers. The lawsuit, brought by rapper RBX and his legal team on November 2, claims Spotify “turned a blind eye” to widespread bot-driven streaming fraud that inflated Drake’s play counts by billions between January 2022 and September 2025. Although Drake himself is not named in the suit and is not accused of wrongdoing, his streaming data highlights the scale of the alleged manipulation.According to the filing, a “non-trivial percentage” of Drake’s staggering 37 billion Spotify streams were generated by fake accounts using sophisticated methods such as VPN masking, where streams meant to appear from the UK were traced back to Turkey. One example cited was 250,000 suspicious plays of Drake’s 2024 hit “No Face.” These fake plays are believed to boost streaming numbers, skew royalty payouts, and alter algorithmic rankings on the platform.

Spotify’s royalty model hit by bot stream fraud, artists demand justice

The core grievance is Spotify’s pay model, where royalties are divided based on a Spotify artist’s share of total streams. The fraud, the suit alleges, has “mass-scale fraudulent streaming causes massive financial harm to legitimate artists, songwriters, producers and other rightsholders” by diluting the royalty pool and redirecting millions of dollars unfairly. RBX, a veteran rapper associated with legends like Dr. Dre, leads the case representing artists who say their earnings have been hurt due to Spotify’s failure to prevent or sufficiently crack down on “mass streaming fraud.” This includes bot farms and fake accounts generating endless play loops to inflate revenue for certain tracks.Spotify responded by denying negligence, stressing its investment in “best-in-class” detection systems to identify and remove fake streams. In 2024, Spotify said it limited payouts to a fraudulent artist to only $60,000 out of a potential $10 million and regularly removes millions of fraudulent streams every month. However, critics argue the measures have not kept pace with evolving fraud tactics.

Drake’s legal battles amid Spotify streaming fraud

Adding complexity to the controversy, earlier this year Drake himself filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group alleging it colluded with unknown parties to inflate rival rapper Kendrick Lamar’s streams through bots – a claim Spotify also denied.Industry watchers estimate that up to 10% of music streams globally may be artificially generated, affecting payouts in the $28-billion streaming market. The lawsuit demands damages, greater transparency, and systemic reforms to prevent future fraudulent activities. With artists, fans, and investors closely watching, this lawsuit underscores the urgent challenge of ensuring fairness in a streaming ecosystem where numbers dictate music industry fortunes.
