Social media in stitches after online poll shows 1% calling Zohran Mamdani ‘far right’: 'Just one guy trolling'

An online poll sparked laughter and a wave of memes after 1 per cent of respondents described New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as “far right.”The survey, conducted by Polling USA on X, asked users: “How would you describe the political viewpoint of Zohran Mamdani?” The results were overwhelmingly to the left, with 33 per cent calling him “far left,” 15 per cent “left,” 4 per cent “centre-left,” and only 1 per cent each calling him “centre-right,” “right,” or “far right.”Social media users found the 1 per cent “far right” response hilarious as Mamdani is a staunch socialist known for his progressive policies and outspoken advocacy for workers’ rights, flooding X with jokes and memes. Mamdani is a self-described democratic socialist and long-time advocate for working-class New Yorkers. He has been one of the most prominent progressive figures in state politics. He is currently contesting the New York City mayoral race against former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. His campaign focuses on taxing the wealthy, expanding public housing, and reforming policing through community investment. Mamdani has also pushed for rent caps, stronger tenant rights, and increased funding for social services. He has previously said, “New York cannot be a playground for billionaires while working people can’t afford a place to live.”The poll result struck many as ironic, given that Mamdani is often branded a “communist” by right-wing critics for his redistributive policies. His platform stands in sharp contrast to far-right ideologies associated with nationalism and authoritarianism. One user reposted the meme and said: “1 per cent of voters think Zohran Mamdani is far right. The other 99 per cent know he’d tax them for thinking that.”
